Parting Thoughts: A Grateful Goodbye

As I write, I find myself reflecting on what will be my final workdays at Hadassah Australia. It has been an immense privilege and a source of great pride to dedicate the past seven years to an organisation committed to raising funds for meaningful, life-saving work. Together, we have contributed to the health and well-being of Israel’s young and old, regardless of race, religion, or background.

Under the inspiring leadership of President Ron Finkel AM, Hadassah Australia has, over 22 years, grown into a force for healing and hope. Through programs that transform lives and enable Australians to participate in the Zionist dream through health, we’ve helped to create ripples of positive change in Israel from far across the world.

The past 15 months have been a particularly challenging chapter in our collective journey. The horror of the October 7 massacre continues to haunt us—the heartbreaking stories, harrowing footage, and the plight of the remaining hostages and their families have left deep scars. Yet, amidst the pain, we’ve also witnessed profound moments of unity and resilience: at heartfelt community rallies, walks and gatherings, and in the collective efforts to raise funds and provide comfort to those in need. These acts of solidarity have been a source of comfort and strength.

What has truly sustained me through these times is the extraordinary generosity of our supporters. Many of you are first-time donors, and your contributions affirm the value of our work—impactful, meaningful, and deeply human programs that strengthen Israel’s health system. Your support fills me with gratitude and hope.

Reflecting on the past seven years, I see it as a period of growth and maturity for Hadassah Australia. In a landscape crowded with very worthy causes, we have stayed focused on what matters most. Our recent efforts have centred on Hadassah’s Gandel Rehabilitation Center at Mount Scopus in Jerusalem—a beacon of healing and hope. Since its partial opening a year ago, we’ve worked tirelessly to ensure it becomes fully operational, ready to meet the growing needs of patients, young and old, seeking its world-class care.

The Gandel Center is a testament to Hadassah’s spirit—an institution that exemplifies the best in healing and innovation. Its recent global accreditation by Joint Commission International (JCI) is a remarkable milestone, highlighting its dedication to excellence in patient care and safety. (see newsletter items)

Another source of pride is our groundbreaking Achotenu Ethiopian-Israeli Scholarships in Health Program. This initiative has been transformational, increasing the number of graduate nurses who are quickly embraced by Israel’s healthcare system. Some of these exceptional Achotenu graduates now serve at Hadassah itself. Soon, the first cohort of occupational therapists will complete their studies and integrate into areas of greatest need—potentially at the Gandel Rehabilitation Center, where their skills will have an immediate and profound impact.

As I step away from my professional role at Hadassah Australia, I want to express my deepest gratitude to the incredible individuals who have made this journey so fulfilling. To President Ron Finkel AM, Vice-President Lynda Brest, and Board Directors Philip Zajac, Julian Gillis, Deborah Travers, Mark Suss, and Einat Lantsberg—your vision, enthusiasm, and commitment have been truly inspiring.

To the past and present staff who have kept the wheels turning, thank you for your dedication and camaraderie. Sean Nochomovitz, Dorit Jaffe, Liora Keidar, Kira Brandt, and Daniel Baise—working alongside you has been a joy. I wish each of you continued success as you carry this vital work forward.

I also thank my Hadassah International colleagues around the globe, led by Jorge Diener, Jeanne and Sandra, and the exceptional medical leadership and staff at Hadassah itself. Your passion and ingenuity have been a constant source of inspiration. Thank you for the invaluable lessons, unforgettable meetings, and cherished memories.

To our loyal donors and supporters: thank you for believing in us and empowering Hadassah Australia to make a real difference. Your generosity enables life-changing programs to flourish. You are an essential and integral part of the Hadassah family.

Finally, I take this opportunity to wish incoming Hadassah Australia CEO, Dorit Jaffe, every success in her new role. I have no doubt that she will lead the organisation to even greater heights of impact and influence.

Hadassah Australia, an organisation that has inspired me every step of the way, thank you for the privilege of being part of this extraordinary mission. I leave with a full heart and immense gratitude.
