Hadassah Pioneers Personalised Orthopaedics with 3D Technology

At Hadassah Hospital, innovation is transforming patient care, particularly in orthopaedics.

Prof. Meir Liebergall, Hadassah’s outgoing head of department, has spearheaded the development of personalised orthopaedics using groundbreaking 3D imaging and printing technologies. He and his team use advanced 3D imaging to determine precisely what needs to be done to repair a wound, allowing for customised, precision treatment for the injured patient.

One remarkable case involved a soldier with a shattered ankle bone. Using 3D imaging, the team created a mirror image of his healthy ankle, designing a titanium implant to precisely replace the missing bone. After surgery, the Gandel Rehabilitation Center’s state-of-the-art facilities, including anti-gravity walking simulators, played a key role in his recovery. Within three months, the soldier was walking again—a testament to the power of innovation and advanced rehabilitation.

Underscoring the link between his team’s pioneering orthopaedic techniques and the Gandel Rehabilitation Center’s visionary approach to the patient’s post-operative recovery, Prof. Liebergall emphasises the need to expand the Gandel Rehabilitation Center to support more patients with life-changing care. “So far, we’ve only managed to open two-and-a-half floors in the new centre”, the Professor concludes: “We need to open all of them”.
