Achotenu graduates enjoy meeting Suzy and Mark Suss’s friends

Melbourne-based Dr Mark and Suzy Suss graciously hosted an afternoon get-together for around 25 friends and colleagues in early March. Along with Hadassah Australia President, Ron Finkel AM, Board Director Lynda Brest, Executive Director Ruth Rosen, and Development Director Dorit Jaffe, Mark welcomed the guests and spoke about why he joined Hadassah Australia’s committee and his recent visit to the hospital.

He shared his experience, as a doctor, visiting Hadassah, being taken into theatre, seeing the facilities, meeting people, and most inspiringly, having the opportunity to meet, Maya, a graduate of the Hadassah-Achotenu Health Scholarship program.

Maya, now a midwife at Hadassah, was one of three nursing graduates on the Zoom link-up from Israel, who, along with Hebrew University Dean of Students, Prof Guy Harpaz, Senior Hadassah Nurse Etti, and partner Israeli organization, La’Ofek-Achotenu Director Judy Lowy, and Program Manager Michal Nurik, spoke warmly of the positive impact the Hadassah-Achotenu scholarship program is having on students, families, a disadvantaged community and Israel as a whole.

The success of the program in helping to resolve Israel’s chronic nursing shortage and, at the same time, providing a pathway to a guaranteed career in health for talented and dedicated students, was emphasised, as was the warm ‘thank you’ to the Australian community for its support.

The success of the program is its alternative pathway to university entry whereby acceptance into the Faculty of Nursing or OT is based on a unique selection process identifying candidates who have a successful learning potential, are highly motivated and have an aptitude for the profession.

Thank you to Mark and Suzy Suss and those who attended the event who were moved and excited to learn about a program that is really making a difference.
