Stepping up and making a difference through health

My recent visit to Israel and to Hadassah Hospital reinforced and revitalised my commitment to the core values of Hadassah. I found the energy and the vitality of the institution itself and the programs that we have supported and embraced over the past 20 years, inspiring. Meeting the Hadassah-Achotenu graduates and students was moving and a transformative example of the power of tertiary education within a community of Olim with so much to give.

Hadassah's Chagall Windows: now featured at Jewish Museum of Australia

The Jewish Museum of Australia - Gandel Center of Judaica (JMA) - is currently showcasing the remarkable Chagall Windows, located at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem in Jerusalem, and Marc Chagall’s lifetime work. The beautifully curated exhibition, dedicated to the museum’s visionary inaugural director, the late Dr Helen Light AM, opened earlier this month. It is a must see for those keen to be transported into the dream world of one of the 20th century’s greatest artists.

New Gandel Rehabilitation Center expands into the Jerusalem sky

On a Friday morning about six months ago, my Israeli cousin’s wife was walking home after buying some donuts for Hanukkah. As she was crossing the crosswalk, she was hit by a jeep and trapped under one of its wheels. Her head hit the pavement and her legs were crushed and contorted. After many days in the hospital and a complex, 10-hour surgery to save her legs, she eventually faced her new full-time job as a patient in an inpatient rehabilitation center. She was lucky to get a bed in a quality comprehensive facility near her home.

Hadassah hosts ground-breaking paediatric disaster management symposium

As medics worked alongside rescue workers to pull the living from the rubble after this year’s earthquake tragedy in Turkey, there was little delineation between the attention given to adults and that given to children. But their needs in times of crisis can be very different. Taking note of that difference, Hadassah staff have begun focusing on paediatric disaster management and are at the forefront of introducing it to the Israeli medical system.
