Yesterday, the Rehabilitation Division of the Israeli Ministry of Defence published the latest data on the wounded since the beginning of the war. The numbers are staggering. 12,000 IDF and security forces personnel have been injured, about half of them under the age of 30. 14% of the injured are classified with life-threatening severe to moderate injuries. 43% have developed various psychological responses.
Since the ground operation in Lebanon began in early October, over 900 wounded have been evacuated to hospitals. This is a 1.5-fold increase compared to September.
With the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon ongoing, the casualty numbers will inevitably, and sadly, increase. In the civilian population the toll has been significant and continues to rise.
Israel’s existing acute rehabilitation infrastructure is stretched to the limit; on the one hand, meeting the needs of the casualties of the current conflict and, on the other, the needs of those in the civilian population recovering from strokes and motor vehicle and industrial accidents.
There is an urgency to act now to increase Israel’s capacity to meet the acute rehabilitation needs of the growing number of wounded. At the heart of this effort is the Gandel Rehabilitation Center at Hadassah Mount Scopus—the only acute rehabilitation facility in the Jerusalem region. Since its partial opening earlier this year (70 out of an authorised 140 inpatient beds), the facility has been on the frontlines helping wounded soldiers and civilians rebuild their lives. The months in acute rehabilitation define a long road to recovery and healing. But with the surge in injuries, the demand for acute rehabilitation has become overwhelming.
Your support is essential during this critical time.
Thanks to the generosity of matching donors and the Australian community, we have made significant progress toward expanding the GRC. To date, we have raised nearly $880,000 toward our $1 million goal to open an additional 70 acute rehabilitation beds—beds that are vital to ensure life-changing care for Israel’s wounded.
This is a critical campaign to support the Gandel Rehabilitation Center—to help ensure that those in desperate need can receive the care required to recover and rebuild.
We are close to our goal, but we need your help to cross the finish line. Together, we can make a real difference in the lives of Israel’s wounded heroes.
