Hadassah orthopaedic surgeon who saves soldiers’ limbs launches Jerusalem marathon

In recognition of her work treating Israeli soldiers wounded in Gaza, Dr Alona Katzir, an orthopaedic trauma specialist at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem, was among the doctors chosen to kick off the Jerusalem Marathon, that took place on March 8, International Women’s Day.

"For a year and a half, I have been receiving surgical training for the treatment of trauma victims, and this prepared me for a situation that noone expected on the 7th of October,” Dr. Katzir said, adding "We use 3D printers as a tool during surgeries to reconstruct limbs as closely as possible to their original state. For instance, a soldier from the Givati Brigade who was severely injured in Gaza, with a bullet penetrating his leg, shattering his knee and upper shin bone, benefited from this. The 3D model we built helped us to reconstruct the damaged area using bone taken from the pelvis, with very high precision and planning. Today, the soldier can already use his knee well, and within a few months, he is expected to fully recover. Ultimately, we are dealing with young people who have experienced orthopaedic trauma, and we want to give them the best future possible."

"There's a significant male majority in surgical fields, as evidenced by me being the first woman in the orthopaedic department's traumatology training program. The reasons are complex, including historical factors and the nature of the profession. Despite being an exception in our department, I work hard to excel and demonstrate that women have a place at the forefront of the profession."
