In the midst of the war in Israel, an Australian Doctors' Initiative is taking a bold step to help save lives and bring healing to some of Israel's most severely injured victims being treated at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem. The innovative "Virtual Volunteering" initiative offers doctors a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact efficiently and effectively.
Beyond Borders, Beyond Boundaries
In times of crisis, the desire to be on the front lines, treating wounded civilians and soldiers, is a sentiment shared by many doctors in Australia. However, the logistical challenges of being physically present in Israel make this a formidable task. Enter "Virtual Volunteering" – a ground-breaking approach that allows doctors to contribute from afar while continuing to provide their essential medical services to their own patients.
A Lifeline for Wounded Soldiers and Civilians
"Virtual Volunteering" is more than a concept; it's a special bond between Australia and the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. By donating the proceeds of their working days, doctors can fund emergency medical programs where they are most needed both in the hospital and in Hadassah’s Gandel Rehabilitation Center, while continuing to see their own patients in Australia.
Dr Robert Baume, a Rheumatologist, and his wife, Dr Ruth Selig, a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, kick-started this initiative with a generous donation of $25,000 to the Hadassah Emergency Appeal. Their contribution represents approximately two weeks of their combined pre-tax salaries. “Ruth and I feel that our contribution is in lieu of actually going to Israel and performing medical duties which would be a logistical nightmare and a lot less effective” explained Dr Baume.
He emphasises the effectiveness of this initiative stating, "It is our duty as doctors to provide medical services to Israel in its greatest hour of need, and this is an effective and efficient way of doing so."
Dr Baume highlights the profound impact Australian doctors can have on the rehabilitation of wounded Israeli soldiers treated at Hadassah and urges others to join in this meaningful cause. “I feel that in this way I am truly helping my ‘greater family’, the people of Israel. Imagine what it means to wounded Israeli soldiers when they learn that doctors from Australia have assisted in their rehabilitation.”
If Not Now, When?
Dr Baume poses a powerful challenge to his medical colleagues and the community at large: "If not now, when?" This rallying cry underscores the urgency of the situation and calls upon the collective responsibility of the medical community to act.
