The vital role that Hadassah Hospital has played for more than a century in protecting the health and wellbeing of ALL Israelis is being demonstrated once again during this unprecedented coronavirus pandemic that is sweeping the world.

I want to share with you the reasons why our iconic and revered hospital has been chosen by the Government of Israel to take a leading role in the fight to defeat an enemy that all of us globally.

The Ministry of Health asked Hadassah to become the Central Virology Laboratory of the State of Israel. This is not only a tremendous honour, but a heavy responsibility. It would not have been handed to our hospital lightly, and I can assure you that the management and clinical staff at Hadassah understand the burden that has been placed on their shoulders.

This is not the first time that Hadassah has taken a leading role in keeping Israelis healthy. We have long promoted Hadassah as ‘more than a hospital’, and this is further evidence that the hospital is at the head of a community response to a national and international health crisis.

Additionally, Hadassah has been designated by the Ministry of Health as one of only six hospitals in Israel to take patients who have been infected by COVID-19. More evidence of the important and ongoing role it plays in a country of almost 9 million people.

At an immense financial cost to the hospital and to avoid any potential risk to other patients and its health professionals, a secure and secluded environment with state-of-the-art equipment on the fifth floor of the Round Building, Ein Kerem, has been created and is being administered by Hadassah’s infectious disease experts.

Volunteers, mainly doctoral students from the sciences, have been recruited to work three shifts a day to double and even triple the number of tests being performed.

To reach this goal a new robot has been put into operation and, with the assistance of The Hebrew University, a new area has been set up to collect the biological materials and then process and neutralize them through automatic systems.

I’m sure you share our pride in what Hadassah is doing and what it has always done – stepping up in a time of need for the people of Israel. This work is made possible with your support. Together we will continue to care of all patients, whoever they are.

Stay safe and stay well!
