On 4 February 2022, Hadassah Australia announced a milestone funding agreement for the Gandel Rehabilitation Center - Australia’s gift to Jerusalem.

It is an inspiring story of hope and impact.

The Greater Jerusalem area of over 1.2 million people is the fastest growing urban area in Israel and has the highest proportion of elderly residents in the country. And yet Jerusalem is in dire need of rehabilitation facilities for disease, illness or injury, with many patients currently forced to travel long distances for treatment, often facing extensive delays which impact their recovery.

In 2019, recognizing the massive shortage of adequate and modern acute and general rehabilitation services in Jerusalem, the Government of Israel partnered with Hadassah to kick-start funding for this once-in-a-generation state of the art rehabilitation facility in Jerusalem.

Now, three years down the track, in a truly inspirational act of generosity, John Gandel AC and Pauline Gandel AC and their family have stepped up to add their unique and significant contribution to the City of Jerusalem. As the leading donors, the new facility will be known as The Gandel Rehabilitation Center.

This magnificent eight-story, modern world-class rehabilitation facility, the Gandel Rehabilitation Center, is located adjacent to the historic Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus, in the very heart of Israel.

Mrs. Pauline Gandel AC and Mr. John Gandel AC

On announcing the landmark gift, Mr. John Gandel AC and Mrs. Pauline Gandel AC said;

Our philanthropy in both Australia and Israel is about creating a positive and lasting difference in people’s lives, and what better way to achieve that, than through enabling the best medical and rehabilitation care for disease, illness or injury, for anyone who may need such help. We are incredibly proud to be involved with this strategic project which we know will, for the first time, provide a vital, first-class rehabilitation service and treatment. We are confident the Center will benefit not only the people of Jerusalem but the whole of Israel, and it will help improve the quality of life of countless individuals and their families. We congratulate Hadassah and the State of Israel on this critical initiative and we are only too happy to be a part of this truly wonderful, momentous development.

The announcement was heralded on the front page of the Australian Jewish News.

With the signature gift from the Gandel family as well as Government and other international philanthropic commitments, progress has been made towards fully funding this top-priority strategic project, due to open in early 2023.

However, a significant amount still needs to be raised to make this critical project happen!

This is a wonderful opportunity for Australians from all walks of life to support a once-in-a-generation capital campaign, Australia’s life-saving Gift to Jerusalem.

Hadassah Australia President, Ron Finkel AM, shared his thoughts;

The Gandel Rehabilitation Center is a truly exciting project, as it is rare that we in the Diaspora have the opportunity to do something with such a long-term and sustainable impact on Israeli society and for Jerusalem. We are incredibly grateful to the Gandel Family for leading the fundraising for this project.

It’s a great opportunity for Australia’s Jewish Community to wrap its arms around a transformative gift to the people of Jerusalem and to the State of Israel.

How you can support the Gandel Rehabilitation Center.
