Each Achotenu story is unique, but they all share a common theme: success. This was evident from the recent webinar where speakers highlighted the impact of the Hadassah-Achotenu Scholarships in Health program.
Moderated by Hadassah Australia Vice-President Lynda Brest, the event featured insights from Prof. Guy Harpaz, Dean of Students at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Prof. Harpaz emphasized the university's commitment to both academic excellence and diversity. He praised the Achotenu program for its impressive outcomes, including a near-zero dropout rate and exceptional academic achievements.
According to Prof. Harpaz, the program’s success is due to the dedication and professionalism of the students and Michal, program coordinator and mentor. He noted that the return on investment for donors is remarkably high, benefiting both the students and their families as well as broader society. “As the Dean of Students, I am particularly proud of the Achotenu program. It is one of the most impactful initiatives at the university,” he stated.
Dr. Nurit Zusman, Head of the Henrietta Szold Hadassah-Hebrew University School of Nursing, highlighted the critical role the Achotenu program plays in addressing Israel’s nursing shortage. This challenge is one that the Hadassah-Hebrew University School of Nursing is actively working to mitigate.
Michal Nurik, Achotenu program coordinator, spoke passionately about the transformative power of education in fostering an inclusive society in Israel. She emphasized the program’s role in integrating Ethiopian-Israeli students into higher education and broader Israeli society. “This year, we have 52 students in the undergraduate bachelor’s program—41 in nursing and 11 in occupational therapy. Additionally, nine students are pursuing master’s degrees, with 14 more in the preparatory program hoping to start their bachelor’s next year,” she reported. Despite delays in the academic year due to the war, Michal noted, “our students have shown remarkable resilience,” and highlighted the substantial support provided by the university and the Achotenu program.
The Achotenu program is making a significant impact on the lives of young Ethiopian-Israelis and the broader Israeli society. By providing access to higher education and facilitating careers in nursing and occupational therapy, Achotenu addresses Israel’s urgent need for trained health professionals while empowering individuals to achieve their dreams.
