Avigayil Deslin A little bit about Avigayil Born in Israel, 24 year old Avigayil has two older sisters and two younger brothers. Her parents made Aliyah with their oldest child in 1985. The family settled in Yavneh, but when Avigayil was in first grade, her parents divorced. Her mother worked hard to raise the family on her own. “As early as I can remember, my mother imbued us with great motivation to maximise our potential. She is very proud of my desire to earn an academic degree - particularly one in nursing.” Avigayil says. Avigayil has dreamt about being a nurse for as long as she can remember. She envisioned herself being part of the Israeli medical establishment but was unsure how she would ever make her dream a reality. Working in a hospital as part of her National Service convinced Avigayil that nursing really was the right career fit for her. She was amazed by the compassion, care and professionalism of the nurses and was moved to see the difference they made to the sick and vulnerable patients they cared for. “After my National Service I was more inspired than ever to become a nurse. However, two barriers stood in my way: the academic program is intensive and would have left no time for me to work and support myself, which I have been doing since I was 16 years old. Also, sharing a small apartment with my mother and four siblings means I have little private space. I was worried that there would be nowhere for me to find the peace and quiet I needed to study.” To Avigayil's relief, the Hadassah-Achotenu program has provided all the support she needs. Currently, in the preparatory program, Avigayil lives in the dorms at The Hebrew University and receives a full scholarship and living subsidy. Without this help, she says she would not have been able to take even the first step towards a career that has been her dream since she was little.
