AUSiMED - the Australia Israel Medical Research Fund:
a not-for-profit Foundation that encourages and financially supports collaborations between medical researchers throughout Israel and Australia.
The AUSiMED story began in June 2004 when the Hon. Steve Bracks, then Premier of Victoria, visited Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, one of the world’s leading centres of healing, teaching and research. The focus of his visit was mass casualty trauma management – specifically, how Hadassah had developed and implemented strategies to deal with man-made and natural mass casualty events. A direct outcome of that visit was the Victorian Governments decision to fund a bilateral collaboration between The Alfred Hospital, the state’s designated mass casualty centre, and Hadassah.
Over the next two years, teams of specialists travelled between Israel and Australia, developing enhanced protocols for The Alfred’s mass casualty trauma management. The new protocols were implemented successfully during the time of Victoria’s Black Saturday bushfires in February 2009.
Since its formal launch in 2009, AUSiMED has channelled almost $1,000,000 into projects ranging from the use of embryonic stem cells to treat Multiple Sclerosis, to the transfer of internationally recognised IP from the Centre for Community Child Health at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital to hospitals in Israel.
AUSiMED currently has an impressive list of projects that have been approved for funding. Many of these projects are at the cutting-edge of medical and scientific research.
Steve Bracks AC, now a Patron of AUSiMED, is a firm believer in the positive power of collaborative medical research and IP transfer.
The list of eminent persons who have also lent their support as Patrons of AUSiMED includes His Excellency Governor David de Kretser AC, Professor Richard Larkins AO, Professor David Cooper AO and Ambassador James Larsen.
The AUSiMED Board of Trustees, chaired by eminent orthopaedic surgeon Professor David Sonnabend, includes some of Australia’s top medical researchers and scientists.
By supporting medical research initiatives that are good for Australia, Israel and, indeed, for the global community, AUSiMED is building strong and enduring bridges between nations and people.
